Today I want to feature a Canadian company who offers a collection combining conflict free diamonds, fairly traded colored gemstones and environmentally conscience precious metals.

Check out the Earthwise Jewelry Collection.

They also offer custom pieces.

That sapphire is just gorgeous!

We helped to plan just an exquisite ceremony on a family farm in September.  It was really relaxed and beautiful.  The Father of the Bride made the arch from scratch (out of wood).  We used an ipod for music.

It was very important for the Bride and Groom to keep things simple, and as eco-friendly as possible.

Take a look at these fabulous pictures by Brendan Bush at Brendan Bush Photography.  I think these wonderful images will speak for themselves.

It was a very beautiful and meaningful day.  The couple incorporated beautifully their family into the entire event.  The sister of the Groom drew willow trees which was incorporated into their recycled invitations.   The couple got married beneath two willow trees.  In lieu of a unity candle, during the ceremony, the bride took a cutting from the Willow tree and they planted the cutting in a large urn.  They later planted the cutting in their yard.

The flowers that they had were absolutely gorgeous and designed by Randy Woods at Wicked Willow LLC.  You can see their work in a number of my blog postings and they are so fabulous.

For favors, we placed bamboo fans on each chair – so the guests could use them during the ceremony.  The simple programs were printed on recycled paper and placed beneath the fans.

“Easy – easy – easy” is what the couple wanted – and “easy – easy – easy” is what they got!

Easy, beautiful, magnificent and memorable

Eco savvy men’s fashion hasn’t come as far as women’s simply because most men rent their tuxes and suits – and that’s already eco friendly and sustainable.

However, if your eco-conscience dude doesn’t want to rent, there are a few options out there for him.

  1. Vintage or consignment clothing.  There are actually a lot of options out there on Etsy – if you want to look through pages and pages of items.  Blah.
  2. A nice and very stylish Hemp Suit is available at Conscience Clothing.  Nice, eh?
  3. Nau has some nice options
  4. Rawganique has some nice hemp suit options, in a variety of colors up to XXL!
  5. Boll Organic has a collection of organic dress shirts

Just a few options for our eco chic grooms!

Everyone wants to save money.  It’s just the way it is.

I’m pretty practical when it comes to money saving.  I always aim to maximize the benefits to make sure that my clients are getting the absolute best for the money that they have.  In that aim, I have put together a few practical money saving tips.  I think these are the major ways you will save the most money and get the most “bang for your buck”.

These are ideas – and maybe not for everyone.  However, they work.

My mantra – Less is more.  My 9 years of experience in the wedding industry has taught me one very tough but important lesson – you get what you pay for.  It rings true – probably in more than just DC.  It’s human nature to want a lot for very little money.  The urge is so strong – sometimes it’s overwhelming.  In all cases – in the end (more like in the middle), the client’s eyes are opened.  Not really the enlightening experience that I want my clients’ to have – or any couple.

One of my clients told me – well, Lisa, everyone has an idea of what they want their wedding to be.  True – and a little eye opening for me!  However, if you cannot pay for what you want – than that idea may have to change somewhat, no?  Alternatively, one can keep postponing – for years and years and years – with the idea that they will save to get what they want.   If you are in this category, please, let me know how that works out for you.  Maybe by “coming to terms” and making some decisions -you will be able to marry the person you cherish most in this world – and also have a memorable experience (both before and on the wedding day).

It’s simply my intention to give you the ideas and the reasoning – so that you have the tools to make the best decisions for you – and maybe dish up a little tough love.

So, here we go – just a few cost cutting ideas…

Solution 1

Decrease the guest list

Reasoning

200 guests at $100.00/person = $20,000

150 guests at $100.00/person =   $15,000

100 guests at $100.00/person = $10,000

Solution 2

Change the time of day

Reasoning

200 guests at $100.00/person = $20,000

150 guests at $100.00/person =   $15,000

100 guests at $100.00/person = $10,000

Alternatively

200 guests at  $40.00/person = $8,000

150 guests at $40.00/person = $6,000

100 guests at $40.00/person = $4,000

Solution 3

Cut out the Wedding Party

Reasoning

Rehearsal dinner – 30 guests (B&G, family, 6 BM, 6 GM, dates, Flower Girl, Ring Bearer) at $50.00/person = $1500.00

Gifts – 18 family/wedding party member at $25.00 = $450.00

Alternatively

Rehearsal dinner – 10 guests (2 moms, 2 dads, 2 grandparents, B&G, siblings) at $50.00/person = $500.00

Gifts – 10 family members at $25.00 per = $250.00

Solution 4

Get rid of the alcohol.  They will survive, I promise.

Reasoning

A lot depends upon whether you are getting married in a hotel or banquet hall, are hiring your own caterer or purchasing your own alcohol.  I will give two examples, and hopefully, one or the other will apply in your situation.

100 guests at $120.00/guest = $12,000.00

100 guests at $140.00/guest – $14,000.00

Alternatively

100 guests at $100.00/guest – $10,000.00

I hope this helps you see how much money can be saved in the different situations.  These same scenarios can be applied to your specific situation.

Happy saving!

There are many great guides on how to plan an eco-friendly wedding on the internet.  Some are better then others.

Of course, you should come here first!  I talk about many great tips on how to make your wedding a bit more eco-friendly.

The Green Wedding Guide is also a great resource.  The reason I like this one stop shop is it has many very good links to eco friendly vendors – all in one place.  You can go dress shopping, accessory shopping, gift shopping and more.

Of course, the Eco Beautiful Wedding blog is a great site for wonderful eco friendly local vendors, eco friendly ideas and real weddings.

I hope this gives your 3 ideas on where to go to plan your eco-chic event!

Eco Friendly Monday – “Green” your Wedding- The Easy Way

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Unfortunately, 50 years ago, we wouldn’t be talking about this topic. If we were, perhaps this world wouldn’t be in the position it is today. As a citizen on this planet, it’s our obligation to do our part to make this world a better place, not only for our children- and our children’s children, but for 20 generations of children down the line. Each small change will make an impact, whether it’s making an effort to turn out a light, putting the weeks paper into a blue container and committing to put it on the curb every week, reducing the amount of waste in a landfill by using cloth on your baby, or by sending out invitations made from recycled paper.
I have seen many couples make efforts to reduce and reuse when it comes to their special day. It has become ‘chic’ to “green” aspects of the wedding. There are many vendors locally and nationally that will help you do this. The most common trend I see is purchasing invitations made from recycled products, and printed with environmentally friendly inks.
Many national companies offer this including Carlson Craft and Birchcraft Studios. Locally, Washington DC has boutique stationary shops, such as Haute Papier specializing in customized stationary design, offers paper products made from recycled products.  Wedding Paper Divas also has some products

Couples are tending to reduce the amount of paper used by excluding programs and menu cards from the festivities. They are also opting for scrolls/charts instead of using place cards. I advise my clients to forgo expensive and wasteful favors that often get left behind and end up in the garbage, in exchange for donations to charities that are important to them. In the weddings that I have done, I have seen couples donate to Breast Cancer Foundations and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, just to name a few. Some of my couples opt to cut out the favors all together. After treating their guests to the most fantastic day, the favors are not at all missed.

Washington DC has seen a number of wedding vendors go “green” in recent years. Jennifer Hughes, a top photographer in the Washington DC and Baltimore Metropolitan areas offers a “green” wedding package. In the package, she offers a photo album made by Couture Books, which is press printed on 100% post consumer recycled, acid free, archival paper. The entire process is powered by green-certified wind power and carbon offsets. Trees are planted with a portion of the proceeds from each book. She also offers Cypress albums, which are completely eco-friendly, with no harm done to trees in the process. She is also looking into purchasing carbon credits to offset her use of electricity and transportation to all of her weddings.

Mydeejay has also taken steps to become eco-friendly. Mydeejay.com is the nation’s first 100% carbon neutral wedding entertainment company. They have achieved this by purchasing carbon offsets for all of their electricity use (both in the office and at events) and all the travel to and from meetings and events. At the wedding, the DJ’s use state of the art digitized systems, which eliminate the need for wasteful CD’s. They have severely reduced their paper use, relying on electronic contracts, planning documents and eFaxes. All the paper that they do use is 100% recycled and their marketing materials are 100% recycled and have environmentally friendly, soy based inks.

Décor is always a fun aspect of the wedding planning process. There are many ways to “green” your décor, says Emily Elizabeth Anderson – Author of Eco Chic Weddings. Some of these ideas include, using paper, fabric and ribbon for color. You can green your décor by utilizing branches in creative and dramatic ways, lighting candles, or using lamps for mood lighting. Utilizing organically grown local florals offers a floral solution. You can also feature edible arrangements for a different touch. Simplicity is key if you want to go green. Try floating a few blooms in shallow vessels or using smaller vases with one bloom for centerpieces. Herbs also are impressive in bulk, or might serve as a great favor, that guests could plant in their gardens.

One common method of saving is utilizing an arrangement more than once; i.e, use ceremony arrangements at the reception. Instead of throwing your flowers away, let others enjoy the blooms, by donating to local hospitals, hospices, homeless shelters, and the like.

So whether you are looking for a sustainable reception site, organic cuisine, recycled paper products, ideas on ways to reduce and reuse, or eco-friendly vendors, there are many options to make your ‘green” affair a raving success!

Okay, this looks way to complicated for me.  However, for you Eco-Savvy DIY Brides, you may like this.

Take a look at this dress made out of Men cotton T’s – the $10.00 wedding dress…

Threadbanger

Ummm, I have no idea how you would get the form – and make sure that it fits your body – but that’s another story.

I think I would have put the broach on the back of the dress.

Ha!  Don’t even think about asking me to do this.
