My style is pretty simple – or rather clean.  Minimalistic maybe.  Timeless definitely.

I meet with couples and they say they want simple.  To me, they are saying inexpensive.  In my mind, simple and inexpensive are not synonymous.  Inexpensive means inexpensive.  Simple means that everything that’s present – is done nicely and placed with purpose.

Two totally different things.

Simple – now that’s my forte.

Have you ever sat down and thought about the pure genius of ivory?  Ivory as the main color, Ivory as  the accent?  Ivory on ivory.

I could have fun with that!

The simple beauty of it all!

I’m not saying that it could be pulled off in any space.  On the contrary, it couldn’t.  But when it’s done well.

Check out just a few ivory on ivory pictures.

Happy planning!

Flowers and other decor is one of those areas people agonize over the most.  They think about what linens and chairs to rent, what flowers to use, what lighting to use, and what candles to buy/rent that will bring out the look and feel that they are going for.

Couples with teeny tiny budgets have even a bigger job.  Realistically, most of your budget is going to be taken by the venue and caterer – maybe more than the 50% standard.   Everything else must come under that remaining 50% or $1,500.00-$2,500.00 that you have remaining.

Not easy.

Flowers are so beautiful, aren’t they?  To me, they just scream wedding.  You see all those elaborate arrangements in magazines that are “to die for”.

This is not to imply that you cannot have beautiful flowers, just that it will be minimal.  here is how the wedding we’re planning helps with the minimalistic decor…

  1. We’ve chosen a venue that has intrinsic beauty and is visually interesting.  There is no need to hide ugly decor under chair covers, and a bunch of flowers.  We are simply enhancing the the look and feel that’s already there.   It’s very important to choose a venue that you can stand aesthetically.
  2. We are planning for a cocktail style reception/meet and greet.  We are not seating everyone for a full meal.  Less tables, smaller tables, and less table decor are needed.  You could do a lot of things with this, depending on he feeling that you want to bring-out.

By planning this type of wedding, you are dealing with much less – and because of that, you can still have nicer linens, flowers and candles.

So, lets prioritize our floral order – assuming that you do not have a wedding party.

  • Bouquet – the Bride must have a nice bouquet
  • Grooms boutonniere
  • 2 corsages for the Mothers’
  • 2 boutonnieres for the fathers
  • 4-6 simple centerpieces – depending upon the number of guests
  • 8 floor length white linens
  • 36 votive candles

We only have $500.00 “tops” to work with.

Since our venue is artsy and light filled, white would be an excellent choice as would yellow.  Bright – light colors would fill the room beautifully and also bring out the artistic feel already intrinsic in the space.  This would especially work if your event happened during the day.  If you wanted a more evening cocktail feel – cocktails after a movie, than muted colors would be appropriate.

Of course this is only a suggestion for the wedding that I’m planning.  You have to think about the look that you want – and choose the decor to reflect your wedding.  It’s only my intention to give ideas where you would still be able to utilize the services of a professional florist to create an elegant look for your wedding.

Happy planning!

I don’t use them all the time – on the contrary – very little.  If it’s a very clean, modern, and edgy feel that you are going for – then this might be one avenue for you to pursue.  With spandex, everything is very clean and polished.  You see only edges and curves – no draping.  If I use them, most of the time it’s on accessory tables – in combination with some lighting to make it more “cool nightclub-ish” – to separate the look and feel to different aspects of the reception.

I think it’s a great look and feel for the “right wedding”.  To pull it off, you have to choose everything with careful consideration.

In all honesty, I’m not so fond of doing spandex on the guest tables.  It looks really cool and all, but I’m not sure it’s too comfortable for your guests.  Try it out and see what you think.

It’s a look.

Lighting design really makes a statement.  Take a look.

Ariel Yve Designs

One can always find very beautiful but dramatic lighting design.  Take a look…

Or it can be simple and still make a statement.

For example, some elegant pinspotting

Or some white or colored Chinese Lanterns.

Some simple uplighting and pinspotting

Here are some lighting terms – so you know what you need when you approach a lighting company

Can uplighting – With a variety of colors available, you choose 1 color to project on walls, columns, etc.  It stays  the same color the entire night – and adds a dramatic effect to any space.

LED Uplighting – Allowing for a large variety of colors, this type of lighting can be programed to change color.  The look and feel of the space can change within seconds.  This type of lighting is more energy efficient

Gobo Lighting – An image, pattern, monogram or design is cut into metal and projected onto walls, ceilings or floors.  Typically, the light is one color, but multiple gobo projections can be made for a multi-colored effect.

Pinspotting – This type of lighting is used to brighten centerpieces, cakes, food stations, or any other focal point in the room.

Happy illuminating!

The purpose of this blog series is to give you ideas for planning a very nice wedding for very low cost in the Washington DC area.

Today, I want to probe the idea of “theme”.  I think your “theme” a very important party of your low cost wedding – especially the one I am proposing.  The time spent at the wedding will be significantly shorter than average, and a well developed and executed theme will provide something for your guests to “grasp onto”.  A theme will also provide visual and intellectual interest.

One potential theme, that could be carried out with 40-100 guests on a $5,000 budget is desserts.  You can’t just place a bunch of desserts on a banquet table and call it a wedding.  To pull it off, everything must be done with thought and class – from the save the dates to the favors and everything in-between.  A color coordinated, pretty display is a necessity.

If your colors are white, you should use white table clothes, white desserts, white flowers, etc.  If your accent color is celadon green, have green desserts.  What about a color scheme of cappuccino or chocolate.  Oh my, your guests will love it!

Next week, we are going to talk about “time” and having a non-dinner reception at a non-dinner time.

Happy planning!

You will find quickly that your tents will be yours, your guests, and your caterers best friends. Since your tents ultimately become an integral part of your venue, and thus a very important component, it’s important that you hire a reputable and reliable company. Don’t skimp on this part – simply because, the tent is so important to the success of your event.

What makes a great tent company great – and worth the extra $$$$?

1. Customer service – they will come out to your house to speak to you about all the options, to measure, and give advice.

2. They will provide drawings.

3. They will attend the final walk-through to confirm all the last minute details.

4. They will be able to caterer to all of your rentals and flooring needs.

5. They will ensure a knowledgeable person on site not only during set up – but during the length of your event – in the event that something comes up.

All these points are very important and should be considered when you are planning your home wedding.

Home tip – Don’t spring for Chiavari chairs if you are not springing for the subfloor.

Happy planning!
